Richard Young Obituary, Death – On behalf of everyone here at SFT, we would like to extend our most heartfelt sympathies to Richard Young’s family and friends on the passing of a much-loved coworker and friend. A week has passed since Richard passed away. On the morning of September 16th, Richard died away in a quiet and peaceful manner at his home, Kite’s Nest Farm, which is situated near to Broadway in the Cotswolds. Richard’s funeral was held at St. Mary’s Church in Broadway.
Richard played an important role in the establishment of the organic movement, first with British Organic Farmers and then with the Soil Association after their establishment. The work he did for both of these organizations was very important to their success. Recent history shows that Richard served as Policy Director at the SFT, where he previously worked. As part of his responsibilities in this position, he oversaw the publication of a number of different research. The intellectual rigor, holistic comprehension, and encyclopedic knowledge of his subjects that Richard possesses made it possible for him to produce these reports.
Richard was also a biodynamic farmer who placed a heavy emphasis on insuring the well-being of his animals and conserving the natural environment in which they lived. Together with his sister Rosamund, he handled the management of Kite’s Nest, a farm in the Cotswolds that comprised 380 acres and served as a proving ground for their extensive knowledge of the interrelationships among the land, its inhabitants, animals, and plants. Kite’s Nest was located in the heart of the Cotswolds, which is a region in the English county of Gloucestershire.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to overestimate the significance of Richard’s contributions to the organic movement during his lifetime and the esteem with which his work is held. Richard was a pioneer in the organic movement. During this time of sorrow, we are keeping in our thoughts and prayers everyone who was fortunate enough to know, love, and respect him.
