Leo Sylvester Obituary, Death – It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Leo, who left this world on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the age of 77, with his devoted wife, Lauraine, by his side at Kirkland Lake Hospital. Leo’s journey began on August 22, 1946, in Cadillac, Abitibi, Quebec, where he came into the world just moments before his twin sister.

Raised from the age of two in the vibrant community of mileage 104 Cobalt, he embarked on his working life at the tender age of sixteen. Leo’s first job was with Elton McKnight, and he went on to work at various places, including the Sherman Mine, Latham’s, MTO, and Birch’s. Leo’s career took him across Canada, where he made his mark in the Diamond Drill Industry and excelled as a heavy equipment operator.

A true lover of the great outdoors, Leo found solace in fishing expeditions on Lake Temiskaming, often casting his line at the famous ‘Sylvester’s Rock’ in Bucke Park or seeking out the elusive pickerel at Lady Evelyn. His passion for country music was infectious, and many had the pleasure of enjoying his guitar melodies and heartfelt singing. Leo’s dedication to the Royal Canadian Legion was unwaverin.

He proudly served as President of the Royal Legion Branch 44 Cobalt for an impressive decade. He also took on the roles of Service Officer and Deputy K-1 Commander before transferring his Legion membership to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 87 Kirkland Lake. In addition to his twin sister, Leona, Leo was predeceased by his parents, siblings Rita, Billy, and Bucky, and his other twin siblings who were called to God’s embrace.

He also mourned the loss of his brothers-in-law John and Leroy and sisters-in-law Verna and Marlene, as well as his father-in-law Jack. Leo’s memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife Lauraine (nee Knight), his sister Diane Sargent, brother-in-law Dick Morin, mother-in-law Dorothy Knight, granddaughter Jenna (Marc Boulay), and great-granddaughters Kimora and Sabrina Boulay.

Leo was the loving father of Timmy Sylvester and leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness embraced by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Leo was an extraordinary soul known for his boundless love, generosity, and care, impacting everyone he met. His penchant for corny jokes, infectious smile, and sense of humor will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Leo’s memory will be cherished, and he will forever be held dear. In these trying times, we find comfort in knowing that Leo’s spirit lives on in our memories. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and selflessness, and he will forever be loved and cherished in our hearts.
